WRITING AN ESSAY

A)     Read the following essay carefully.

Mobile phones have a negative effect on teenagers´ lives ? Do you agree? Write your essay about it.

While some people say that mobile phones play a fundamental role in our lives, others think that they have a negative effect. I believe this invention has changed modern life radically.
The advantages of mobile phones are undeniable. It is clear that they help us to be in contact with friends and family. There is no doubt that you have the opportunity to install really useful applications. In addition, looking for information on this device has an enormous impact on the topics children and teenagers learn.
On the other handa recent survey has shown that 90% of students are easily distracted. Also, according to a recent research teenagers spend too much time on social networks, which could be really dangerous.
In conclusion, I think that mobile phones make our lives easier and their importance is vital at present. However, parents should supervise their children more often so that they do not devote a significant number of hours there.

B)      Write your essay about one of the following topics.  Use the essay above to follow the correct style and number of paragraphs. Use the highlighted phrases to help you.

1) Video games are affecting student´s results at school. Do you agree?
2) Living in the countryside is better than living in big cities. Do you agree?
3) Fast food has a negative effect on our health. Do you agree?

REMEMBER!

-          An essay is objective.
-          You can´t exaggerate. (You exaggerate in articles).
-          It is formal.
-          It is NOT about you. It is impersonal.

Some impersonal comments:
Many people share the view that …
Many experts say that …
There is no doubt that …
A recent survey has shown / shows that …
There are those who believe that …
According to a recent research, …

B) You are going to listen to a man called Chris Graham talking about his holiday job in Australia. This text has seventeen grammar mistakes that the person doesn´t make. Write all the corrections in the folder.
Example: 1) There ARE lots of …

Hello everyone. My name is Chris Graham and I spent my last vacation working in Australia. The place I was in is a popular tourist spot so there is lots of student jobs advertised in the newspaper – from hotel work to being a tour guide. I see my job, for a bus driver, on the Internet, and so I applied. I’d recommend you do that too. The whole idea of get to know another country really appealed to me and I’m really pleased I had the opportunity to go.
I worked for a company which tries to help tourists understand what life used to be like before Europeans arrive – a time before clothes, cars and electricity. Many of the local people, the Aborigines, work for the company. Study tourism at university wasn’t essential to get the job – in fact, my subject’s history. What I did do was a short training course when I first arrived, though, to learn about the local plants and animals.
At first, I was given a room in a hotel in town but I find that I felt quite lonely so I moved into a caravan on the outskirts. Lots of other staff lived on the site and I got to meet lots of the local people there too. Everyone were really friendly and, as there wasn’t a cinema or restaurant nearby, people frequently had a party on Saturday night and I was always invited.
I worked six days a week, and I had to got up really early in the morning when most people, and even the birds and animals, are asleep. This is so the tourists can get to take photos of the sunrise. I used to pick them up from their hotels around 5 AM and then head out of town and into the desert.
The tourists were from all over the world and often had no experience of the heat. They know, of course, about covering their head and neck with a hat but often left their shoulders uncovered, which wasn’t very sensible, especially if they hadn’t been in the country for long and weren’t used to the sun.
After we have been into the desert, I would take the tourists to the local cultural centre, where they had the opportunity to ask questions. The tourists were especially keen to find out how to distinguish the tracks of kangaroos from wallabies and wild dogs.
After the morning session I usually went back home, had a shower and a rest, then started again around two in the afternoon. I used to took the afternoon group to a water hole, where they were shown which plants could be eaten and which were also used to make weapons for hunt.
At one time, there was very few tourists in the particular area I worked in, because you needed to get a coach from the small railway station in the nearest large town, a good 200 kilometres away.
There’s now an airport but the local government is keen to get one built which can take more flights, especially from abroad.  I’m not sure about that, as I think it’s busy enough as it is, but it will be good for the local economy, no doubt about it.

Anyway, I really recommend work in Australia during your vacation. The busy tourist season in the area where I worked is from May to October, so you need to make sure your application is in by the January of the year you are hope to work.  You might not hear until March as it take a while to process the applications and get references, but make sure you doesn´t leave it too late.

C)

4)     How long have they been there?

6)     Why do they do this together?

ACTIVITY YOU HAVE TO SEND

A)     Read the following essay carefully.

Mobile phones have a negative effect on teenagers´ lives ? Do you agree? Write your essay about it.

While some people say that mobile phones play a fundamental role in our lives, others think that they have a negative effect. I believe this invention has changed modern life radically.
The advantages of mobile phones are undeniable. It is clear that they help us to be in contact with friends and family. There is no doubt that you have the opportunity to install really useful applications. In addition, looking for information on this device has an enormous impact on the topics children and teenagers learn.
On the other hand, a recent survey has shown that 90% of students are easily distracted.

A)    Read the text and mark true or false.
The most heart-stopping moment that I have ever had was when I was walking around the picturesque streets of Manchester.

It was a bone-chilling night but I decided to go out anyway. As usual, my wife was eager to get some sleep and it was impossible for me to persuade her to go for a walk in such freezing weather and at such a late time.
As I was crossing the street I bumped into an old man who was staring at me. The more I looked closely at him, the more terrified I was. Never in my scariest dreams did I think a person could send shivers down my spine. I did not take any notice of his clothes. Moreover,  I was not able to make eye contact with him.

Desperately, I dashed to the other corner. As I turned back, the man had disappeared. The place was deserted and I realised that all the shops had already closed. I was alone and I had never experienced such terror. I had chosen to explore the amazing views of the city at night but ended up desiring to get to the hotel as soon as possible.

As soon as I entered the room, I noticed that my wife was not there. I spotted a note on the bedside table that said: 'I am exhausted but I would like to join you. I will be with you in a minute'. My heart began beating really fast. Even the thought of that crazy figure meeting Sarah made me feel petrified
Despite the fact that I had trouble thinking clearly and properly, I was brave enough to see if my true love was safe. I left the Radisson Blu in such a hurry that I was not aware of the surroundings. I turned the corner and I saw that Sarah was crossing the street when a black Bentley was running towards her. I did not dare to watch.
When I opened my eyes, she had already reached the pavement.  She was lying on the floor. I rushed to lift her. I still cannot believe what she told me as I helped her to get to her feet. She was trying to thank an old man that had pushed her not to be hit by the car. She was really disappointed that he was not there any more.
Every time I look back on that holiday in Manchester all I have are memories of that mysterous person that I mistook for someone who had been out of a horror film. However, he turned out to be a sort of guardian angel. I insist I would like to embrace the challenge to visit that famous northern English city again.

ACTIVITIES WE WILL BE CHECKING IN THE NEXT ONLINE CLASS

Write or paste the following explanation in the folder. Read it carefully.

Present Perfect Simple versus Present Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect Simple:

 Subject + have/has + Past Participle Verb

I have visited Ireland. It is a beautiful country. (EXPERIENCES / PAST ACTIONS IN WHICH THE TIME IS NOT IMPORTANT)

I have just finished my homework. (RECENT ACTIONS)

I have had this mobile phone for two years. (WE DESCRIBE A STATE/SITUATION WITH STATIVE VERBS (BE/LIKE/HAVE/WANT) THAT STARTED IN THE PAST AND CONTINUES UP TO THE PRESENT.

Present Perfect Continuous:
Subject+ have/has + been + verb with – ing

I have been playing tennis for many years.

Mary has been working as a teacher for twenty years.

I have been doing homework since this morning.

Where is Tom? I have been waiting here for ages.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS REFERS TO AN ACTION (DYNAMIC VERBS) THAT STARTED IN THE PAST AND CONTINUES UP TO THE PRESENT. THERE IS AN EMPHASIS ON THE LENGTH/DURATION OF THE ACTION. SOME DYNAMIC VERBS: PLAY, SPEAK, LISTEN, STUDY, READ.
